چکیده

The present study of cytogenetic characteristics in seed progeny of woody plants in stress and no-stress conditions is important for better arrangement of green spaces in cities and reforestation on anthropogenically polluted territories because it allows to select maternal trees producing seeds resistant to stress factors. The following cytogenetic characteristics of the root meristematic cells of weeping birch (Betula pendula Roth) seedlings were studied: mitotic and nucleolar activities, frequency and spectrum of pathological mitosis, frequency of persistent nucleolus in mitosis. Seeds for this study were collected from maternal trees growing in anthropogenically polluted and ecologically safe areas of the Central Black Earth Region of Russia. Cluster analysis revealed four clusters of seedlings on each territory: “mutable”, “low-mutable” and two clusters with intermediate characteristics. The characteristics and differences of these clusters are described in the article. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Influence of Air Pollution on Cytogenetic Characteristics of Birch Seed Progeny

Cytogenetic characteristics (mitotic index, level and spectrum of pathological mitosis, sizes of single and pair nucleoli, frequency of polynucleolar cells, nucleoli's types, frequency of persistent nucleoli in stages of metaphase telophase of mitosis) of birch (Betula pendula Roth.) seed progeny were studied in some districts of Voronezh, which differed in degree of air pollution. The increase...

Micropropagated Silver Birches (Betula pendula) in the Field – Performance and Clonal Differences

Micropropagated and seed-born silver birches (Betula pendula Roth) were compared for survival, height growth and occurrence of biotic damage (voles, hares, mooses, stem lesions and cankers) in fi eld trials in southern Finland. The material consisted of 11 clones and 10 different lots of seedlings growing in 10 fi eld trials, established in clearcut forest cultivation areas. The plants were 6–7...

Lignin characteristics and ecological interactions of PtCOMT-modified silver birch

The 35Sand UbB1-PtCOMT genes were transferred by biolistic bombardment into silver birch, Betula pendula Roth, and the effects on syringyl (S) lignin unit synthesis were investigated. The transgenes were stably integrated into the B. pendula genomes, and their variable expression was observed. In the 35S-PtCOMT lines, a reduced syringyl/guaiacyl (S/G) ratio and incorporation of abnormal 5-OH-G ...

Breeding Increases the Efficacy of Chondrostereum purpureum in the Sprout Control of Birch

We tested whether the pairing of selected isolates could be used to increase the efficiency of a decay fungus Chondrostereum purpureum (Pers. Ex Fr.) Pouzar to control hardwood sprouting in Finland. We paired C. purpureum strains efficient in sprout control or highly active in laccase production, and tested the efficacy of their progeny in spout control experiments. This procedure resulted in a...
